"Pictures from the Past"

"Having trawled through many old photos on my computer I have accumulated them all together in one collective webpage.  This will make it easier to add more photos and experiences in the future without having to create new webpages every time."...Mike G

Berlin, November 2007

After my retirement at the end of 2004, as well as holidaying a lot more I also spent some time in a consultancy role with Pfizer during which I got the opportunity to travel to many places in Europe carrying out tests on pharmaceutical equipment being purchased by Pfizer.  One of those places was Berlin, where our English host took us on a tour of Berlin to include, the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie.  The Berlin Wall stood from 1961 until 1989, is 155km long and was designed specifically to keep people in (the east) with border guards having orders to shoot on site at anyone attempting the crossing.  Of the 140 total deaths that occurred at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989, 91 of the victims – mostly people trying to flee – had been shot by GDR border soldiers.  Checkpoint Charlie, once manned by American GI's but now with local inhabitants dressed up to look like US guards.  The remains of the wall have been turned into a sort of museum with pictures of various activities associated with the wall in a covered walkway on one side; also the course of the wall is now marked throughout the city by blocksd laid into the ground for the whole length.
